Chapter Eleven - Choices Made
Jack
The next morning was incredibly awkward, to say the least. I woke early to go to the bathroom but ended up walking in on Rowan taking a shower. To be fair, the bathroom door hadnât been locked. I had realized someone was in the shower only after I walked into the room. Rowan, assuming I was Lily, reached his hand out from behind the shower curtain and asked me if I could hand him a bottle of shampoo. Embarrassment was not nearly strong enough a word to describe my reaction.
âUh, sorry, I didnât realize anyone was in here,â I replied.
It took several seconds for the realization to dawn on him. âJust close the door on your way out,â he mumbled.
At lunch, neither Rowan nor I made eye contact with each other. Lily sent both of us puzzled looks but had to rush to the bathroom because of morning sickness before she had a chance to question us. Rowan hurried after her, which left LeAnne and me by ourselves.
âAre you feeling okay?â I asked.
She didnât look like she was all right, only I didnât know how to fix it. There wasnât an immediate way that I could improve our situation, and there wasnât any way I could give her family back to her. The single solution I could come up with was that I needed to give her a new family. I would give myself to her.
âFine,â she replied.
She didnât look good. Her hair was pulled into a knot at the base of her neck, and her eyes were rimmed with red. Lily had loaned her a pair of athletic leggings and a T-shirt, which were several sizes too big. To be bluntly honest, I was surprised that Lily owned any articles of clothing that were intended for anything that had to do with running. Lily and any sort of fast movement generally were not a good combination. LeAnne looked as if she was swimming in the shirt and had rolled up the leggings at least a couple of times. Lily had offered her a dress first, but LeAnne had requested pants. Lily had also retrieved a pair of jeans and a hoodie from Rowanâs closet for me. They were as giant on me as Lilyâs clothes were on LeAnne. The difference was that it made LeAnne look cute, while it made me look like a twig.
âMaybe we should go for a walk,â I offered.
It was the most I could do at that moment. I would try everything I could to even slightly improve her life.
âYeah, that would be nice.â She smiled.
I would have lived a hundred years more even if the only happiness I received the entire time was from the warmth of her soft smile.
I took her hand in mine and led her out the front door. On our way outside, we passed Forest and Clay; they had taken over for Thomas and Cameron early in the morning. They nodded at us but didnât give me anything close to resembling a smile.
